Osaka Day 1: Dotombori

I wanted to share some photos from my last trip to Osaka. Being a third largest / second most important city of the country, there are beautiful historical sites as well as more modern and vibrant new quarters.

This trip happened rather spontaneously while I was travelling in South Korea. The weekend getaway was perfect with great food and lots of shopping around Dotombori on the first day. Osaka-Jo, bit of Kita for Umeda Sky Garden, and other Minami areas including Amerika-mura the second day. and Tempozan Ferris wheel the third day.

Due to the abundance of photos, I divided my posts to 3 parts based on my itinerary above. Enjoy! :-)

We arrived to Osaka around sundown. The schoolgirls matching uniforms and backpacks were quite amusing. Seems some part of this country's time sits still.

I forgot the exact name of the hotel we stayed at. It is a new concept hotel/inn type that is categorized as business-tel. It is designed to have everything that you need of a hotel, but targeted for people on their business trips. As you are not here to enjoy the luxurious hotel amenities, the space is very compact and efficient - and supposedly cheaper too!

Then we headed out to Dotombori...

I had been to Osaka when I was in elementary school way way back. I never realized this city is planned this well and kept very clean. Unfortunately I do not have any photos of the ramen-ya we had our dinner at. It is called Kinryu Ramen and you cannot miss the giant dragon figure on their store front. You purchase the type of ramen using a vending machine and present the ticket to the staff. This open concept restaurant experience was very fun!

We went to an Izakaya for a pint of beer before heading back to our hotel. We walked into one random place that caught our eyes. And the pint of Asahi had the softest foam! As they had no English menu, our server was very kind of recommend a few dishes which were all excellent.

And back to our hotel with some snacks from the convenience store.
Thanks for reading! :-)

Areas are as below:
  • Kita (City North): Umeda, Kita
    • leading fashion and trend streets, "gateway to kansai," commercial district, Grand Front Osaka - largest shopping center in Japan (via JR Osaka Station)
  • Minami (City South)/Dotombori
    • the lively area with Kanidouraku & Glico signs, Minamisemba and Horie with lots of shops and cafes, and Shisaibashi, Amerika-mura (American Village) with more shopping! Bunraku and Kabuku show theatres, as well as manzai style comedy - "The REAL Osaka"
  • Osaka Castle (Osaka-Jo), Tsurumiryoukuchi
    • very historic area with meseum and ruins
